iPod screens dipped in color

Apple Computer has combined its iPod and iPod Photo models, adding
color screens to three models, and has updated iTunes to let people
download podcasts.

The new iPods feature color screens and can display photos, the company said Tuesday.

The new 60GB model can store 25,000 digital photos or 15,000 songs,
while the new 20GB version can hold 20,000 photos or 5,000 songs. The
company also released a new 20GB iPod U2 Special Edition with a color
screen.

Using an optional connector, people can import photos from a digital
camera. They can then add music and create slideshows for viewing on an
iPod or TV screen, Apple said.

The new 20GB iPod sells for $299; the 60GB version is priced at
$399. The new U2 iPod will cost $329. Apple also announced a price cut
on the 1GB iPod Shuffle from $149 to $129.

The music players will offer a Podcast menu, included in an upgraded
version of iTunes that was also released Tuesday. Apple CEO Steve Jobs
had announced earlier this year plans to allow iTunes to support the
creation and distribution of podcasts to help podcasters earn money through subscriptions.

“Apple is taking Podcasting mainstream by building it right into iTunes,” Jobs said in a statement Tuesday.

The company also said that as of March 31, 15 million iPods have been
sold and 430 million songs have been downloaded from its iTunes music
store.
